Chapter Twelve
That Monday morning, I was up and out of the apartment before six. The rest of Sunday hadnât been too bad. On the way home from Mrs. Harkerâs I stopped and picked up some videos to watch with Ross. I rented The Big Chill, Vacation and Scarface. I wasnât sure if his family had let him see any movies, but I was fairly certain they would not have let him see these. I lay on the pullout with Ross while Joseph sat uncomfortably in one of the dining chairs. After the first movie, we ordered pizza. It wasnât a great night, but it was not among the worst either.
The break room at Cooke, Babcock and Lackerby was well stocked. I didnât bother with takeout coffee, instead I brewed myself a pot when I got there at six thirty-five. They had their coffee sent in from Seattle, which was bizarre since I didnât think they grew coffee beans there any more than they grew them in Chicago. Still, it was pretty good.
I settled in and began going through more of Jimmyâs boxes, making stacks to copy, making sure Iâd already read the files. I did my best not to feel guilty about ignoring Christianâs case all weekend. Especially since my opinion of him was changing a little. It was decent of him to try and protect me from Devlin. Stupid, but decent. It was the only decent thing I could really remember him doing.
The Russell Rousse lead was promising and I planned to keep following it up. There might even be something to the idea that Digby himself had been the intended victim. Or that heâd also known Rousse.
On the other hand, a case like this was either going to take forever or it was going to wrap up incredibly fast. If the gunpowder residue tests came back positive, then the SA would likely offer a deal. Under normal circumstances Christian would be wise to take the deal whether he fired a gun or not; actually more so if he was innocent. If the CPD was faking that kind of evidence it meant they planned to put him away no matter what.
Another thing was nagging at me that had nothing to do with Christian. I was beginning to wonder if Mickey had had enough sense to leave town. I knew he liked to butch it up and pretend he was some kind of macho thug, but this was a problem he couldnât solve with attitude. Heâd informed on one of the most powerful members of the Outfit in Chicago. What he needed to do was run away, crawl under a rock, change his name and consider plastic surgery for his face. I had the uncomfortable feeling he wasnât going to do any of that.
Over the next few hours, I drank an entire pot of coffee while nothing of interest turned up in any of Jimmyâs files. I was about to go back to the break room and get yet another
